"Lorrie Morgan" Interview with One of the Legendary Women of Country w/Kim Cyr

LORRIE MORGAN and PAM TILLIS "Grits and Glamour
Interview with Lorrie Morgan w/Kim Cyr Country NOW and THEN Magazine

Grits & Glamour Photo Shoot Behind The Scenes!

One of the most eloquently emotive country vocalists of modern times is launching her first new solo album in five years.

Lorrie Morgan, the first woman in her genre to begin her career with three consecutive Platinum albums, re-emerges on Shanachie Entertainment with Letting Go….Slow. It is a collection that showcases a rainbow of emotions, from darkest heartache to bright, shiny humor.    “Where I am in my life right now, I’m not afraid to express what I feel, or what I don’t feel,” she comments about the collection’s varied moods. “I’m not afraid to express my views on anything, especially on being a woman.

“I have been a daughter, a bride, a mother, a divorcee, a widow, a single mother, a breadwinner and, ultimately, a survivor. In many ways, I am a living, breathing country song, and I know what I sing.

“I didn’t want this to be just another album. I wanted it to be something that really moved me. When I listened to songs for it, I’d think, ‘No, not that one. I’m not going to be able to sing that one, because I’m not going to be able to feel it.’ It was very important to me for this album to reflect the things that I am feeling today.”

Morgan has long been the envy of her peers for her lustrous vocal phrasing and the down-to-earth believability of her torchy performances. On records such as “A Picture of Me Without You” and “I Guess You Had to Be There,” she ached with pain. She was feisty and sassy in “Watch Me,” “What Part of No” “Five Minutes” and “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.” She has kicked up her stiletto heels in fun on her hits “Except for Monday” and “Go Away.” On her epic “Something in Red” she was an anguished, struggling everywoman.

Her performances on Letting Go….Slow can match any of her earlier efforts, for they are among the most vibrant of her career. The collection is divided equally between new songs and her reinventions of country classics.

This peerless song interpreter brings a soprano lilt and a cha-cha retro tempo to the Patsy Cline favorite “Strange.” Bobbie Gentry’s Southern-gothic saga “Ode to Billie Jo” is taken at a slow, swampy pace with Morgan dipping into her deep alto register. She brings
enormous tenderness to Vern Gosdin’s “Is It Raining at Your House.”

On Bob Dylan’s “Lay, Lady Lay,” Morgan is pert and jaunty, riding a reggae groove. She resonates sadness in her version of Larry Gatlin’s “I’ve Done Enough Dying Today,” but rises resiliently in her reworking of Earl Thomas Conley’s “What I’d Say.”

Each of the new songs she has chosen for Letting Go…Slow is a small revelation. “Something About Trains” is a highly inventive arrangement and a contemplative lyric, both of which fit this singing stylist like fine couture. “Slow” is a power ballad that she gives a torrid, emotional undertow. “Jesus and Hairspray is “one for the girls,” a humorous, upbeat and highly entertaining ditty incorporating the old aphorism, “the higher the hair, the closer to heaven.”

Morgan co-wrote “How Does It Feel” in response to her divorce from singer Sammy Kershaw several years ago. The sublimely country “Lonely Whiskey” is the penultimate barroom weeper. The stunning “Spilt Milk,” on the other hand, finds the singer exploring a jazzier tone as she adopts an after-hours cabaret mood.

To record this remarkable return to disc, Lorrie Morgan reunited with producer Richard Landis. He has helped craft many of her prior hits, as well as acclaimed recordings for Vince Gill, Neil Diamond, Ronnie Milsap, Juice Newton, Eddie Rabbitt, Poco, Kenny Rogers, Dionne Warwick, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and dozens more.

“Richard is so creative,” says Morgan. “It sounds like a cliche, but he really is a musical genius. And he believes in what he produces so passionately that it scares people. He’s very intense. We feed off of each other in the studio. We push each other to be better. He has a way of making me try harder.

“We recorded in a former church that has been turned into a recording studio on Music Row. It had a great vibe. We had all the musicians in there with me. I wanted it to sound like me and the guys just sitting and playing. It’s a very warm sounding record, with the steel, the harmonica and the dobro ‘answering’ my vocals. I like to sing ‘live’ with the musicians. A lot of the vocals on this album were done in one take, because I feed off the musicians. And Richard encourages that.

“I have been living with some of these songs for more than a year. ‘I’ve Done Enough Dyring Today’ and ‘Is It Raining at Your
House’ are songs I have wanted to record for 10 years. I sang ‘Ode to Billie Jo’ in my live shows for a long time.”

“Slow” is co-written by Ashlee Hewitt, who is Lorrie Morgan’s daughter-in-law and former backup singer. Hewitt now performs in the up-and-coming Nashville trio Post Monroe. “How Does It Feel” is even closer to home, since Morgan co-wrote it herself.

“I have always written songs, and I do love to write,” she comments. “But I don’t like to pair up with a lot of people. It’s more of a personal thing with me. It usually bothers me to co-write, and I don’t like appointment writing, at all. Plus, I’m not one of those people who says, ‘If I didn’t write it, I’m not going to record it.’ If somebody else’s song is better, I’m going to record it and not mine.”

Lorrie Morgan has been around great songs all her life. She is a Nashville native who is the daughter of Country Music Hall of Fame member George Morgan. She made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry stage at age 13, singing “Paper Roses.” Her father died suddenly of a heart attack at age 51. She was l6 at the time and just beginning her musical career. Lorrie Morgan began making records shortly thereafter. She was honored with induction into the Opry cast when she was just 24.

Morgan married fellow country singer Keith Whitley in 1986. She was signed to RCA Records in 1987, and her onslaught of hits began the following year. Whitley’s tragic death of an alcohol overdose in 1989 left her a widowed working mother. Their duet “Til a Tear Becomes a Rose” earned her a 1990 CMA award.

Her first three albums, Leave the Light On (1989), Something in Red (1991) and Watch Me (1992), all earned Platinum Record awards. Her Greatest Hits collection (1999) is also Platinum. War Paint (1994), Greater Need (1996) and Shakin’ Things Up (1997) are all Gold Record winners.

She sang “The Sad Cafe“ on Common Threads: Songs of the Eagles, which was named the CMA Album of the Year in 1994. Country fans voted Lorrie Morgan their TNN/Music City News Female Vocalist of the Year in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998.

Lorrie Morgan maintained her recording pace in the new millennium, releasing collections in 2002, 2004, 2009 and 2010. In 2012 and 2013, Morgan starred and sparkled in the lavish Enchanted
Christmas productions at the opulent Opryland Resort in Nashville. She took that show on the road in 2014.

In 2013, she teamed with fellow Opry star Pam Tillis for the duet CD Dos Divas. The two hit makers then embarked on a two-year joint tour that sold out every appearance.

“We had a blast,” says Morgan with a chuckle. “It wasn’t until the Grits & Glamor tour that we really connected. We connected as working mothers, as businesswomen, as second-generation performers.” Pam is the daughter of Country Music Hall of Fame member Mel Tillis, who co-wrote “Strange” on Morgan’s new CD. Both women also share a finely honed sense of humor.

“I pride myself on my humor. My dad used to say, ‘You should never take yourself too seriously,’ and I got my sense of humor from my dad. I love to have fun. I’ve reached the age where I feel that I deserve good company around me, people who can make me laugh, who love music and who love to have a good time.

“On the outside, I’m very lighthearted. But on the inside, I have a lot of pain that I deal with. Singing is my therapy, and that is what this album is all about. ‘Lonely Whiskey’ says it all. Like I said, I’m at the point where I’m not afraid to sing about what I want to sing and to be creative. And this record gave me that chance.

“I didn’t want to record just another nice little album that gets put away on a shelf. I wanted to record a Grammy Award winning album. That was my goal.

“But no matter what happens, I think these recording sessions were just magical. It was the most fun I’ve ever had doing an album.”

Country NOW and THEN, 'Celebrating the Legendary Oak Ridge Boys' "Richard Sterban,The Man Behind the Voice'  Interview w/Kim Cyr"

I had the change to sit down with Richard Sterban, from the Oak Ridge Boys, to learn about the man behind the voice of the legendary Grammy Award winning band! To hear the interview, click here

There were so many moments that meant a great deal to me in this interview and the real life story about Richard Sterban and the incredible life he has lead in the music industry both NOW and THEN.  There is so much history and stories he had to share.  We scratched only a very small portion of his legendary life and I hope that after hearing this interview, that you will go out and buy Richard's book "'From Elvis to Elvira".

You can pick this book up at The Oak Ridge Boys concert wherever you attend, at the merchandise table. The book tells about Richard Sterban's early years in the Gospel Music Industry that led him to be a backup singer for 'Elvis Presley' and onto his time in The Oaks. The book was honest and full of fascinating  great stories. Sterban talks about his early relationship with fellow Oak as well- before they were both in the Oaks.

I enjoyed the honesty in his discussion on Steve Sanders year's of the Oak Ridge Boys, which most books about the band seem to ignore.
This was a great read and was glad I picked it up. Great tales about Elvis, The Oaks, and getting to know Sterban and his life.

This is a must read. Click here

Aaron Pritchett Juno Nomination for 'Album of the Year' 'The Score'

Live Interview with Aaron Pritchett w/Kim Cyr, click here

Vancouver, BC – CCMA winner Aaron Pritchett is back on top riding the ride of his life with his brand new single 'When A Momma’s Boy Meets A Daddy’s Girl, the third single off the highly acclaimed project and was released on January 24th to country radio from his album “The Score”.  Aaron has released 7 studio albums followed up by his latest new album 'The Score' released in June 2016.

Aaron recently won “Fans’ Choice” and “Single of the Year” at the 2016 British Columbia Country Music Awards (BCCMA’s), and the newly released single “When a Momma’s Boy Meets A Daddy’s Girl” is sure to also gain favourable attention from the country music industry. The new single was written in Nashville by three notable Canadian songwriters, including country music artist Aaron Goodvin.

Pairing up with Director Cole Northey for the third time, the video for 'When a Momma’s Boy Meets A Daddy’s Girl' showcases a romantic collection of stories, glancing into the lives of four couples during the many stages of relationships. Northey recently won “Video of the Year” for Dirt Road In’ Em at the BCCMA’s. Make sure to watch for the video on CMT and Youtube.  Here is the much anticipated video for 'When a Momma's Boy Meets a Daddy's Girl' check it out!

I recently had the chance to sit down with Canadian country superstar Aaron Pritchett (see attached Podcast Interview).  Aaron is known for his rock infused, high energy performances on stage making Aaron Pritchett one of the most sought after artists in the business. His passion and intensity for his art overflows on stage and spills into his unwavering dedication to his fans.

The dedication Aaron Pritchett has for his fans is a very big part of his successful career for the past two decades.  His ability to relate to the stories in the songs he sings radiates to his fans who can see themselves in their everyday lives.  "I was going fishing, camping, and riding buses to hockey tournaments in smaller towns than my own, that's the reason country music resonated with me and I strive to convey that in my music today,'" says Pritchett.

There is no doubt that his rock roots have had a major influence on his sound with hits such as the classic’s “Big Wheel”, “Hold My Beer” and “Let’s Get Rowdy”  to his latest “Boat on the Water”, “Hold You Like My Whiskey” and “Wake You With A Kiss”. Following on the heels of a cross Canada tour, Aaron 2015 will see the release of a much anticipated greatest hits album.

David James Brand New Video For His Single 'What If I Don't' Interview with Kim Cyr

David James Brand New Video "What If I Don't"

Interview with David James and Kim Cyr

With his debut performance at Boots and Hearts, a new EP, and two 2016 Canadian Country Music Association® (CCMA®) Award™ nominations in the Rising Star and Recording Package of the Year (for album Songs About A Girl) categories, David has truly settled in as a seasoned artist.

His debut 6 song EP Songs About A Girl (release date: March 11, 2016) was produced in collaboration with music industry’s esteemed Darren Savard (Dallas Smith) and Carly Savard (One More Girl).  Three years in the making, every note has been meticulously crafted to evoke the deepest and complex emotions amidst the listeners. Says James about the album, “These songs carry aspects of the human experience we all share – love, passion, perseverance, and really laying it all on the line for those you care about.”

A 2014 CCMA Discovery Program Finalist, in 2015 he won his first Manitoba Country Music Award (MCMA) in the Music Video of the Year category for his first single off of the EP, “What We Weren’t Looking For”. The single is a melodic love song exploring the intoxicating surprise of an unexpected romance.  The song was also featured on the NOW County 10 complication. His single “Lonely Girl,” written by the talented Ben Tennis (Jason Aldean, Parmalee), Brad Rempel (of High Valley), and AJ Goodvin hit the radio waves on March 8, 2016.  An artist with a diverse repertoire, in contrast to his previous release David describes his single (“Lonely Girl”) as upbeat and especially fun to play live.  He shares, “the message behind the song is that even at our lowest lows, everyone has so much to offer and deserves to be loved.”

Known for his charming sense of humour, like many artists, music and songwriting has always been in his soul. He jokes his career path was clearly defined, “when at age 14, following my impassioned performance of Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing’, I came in almost dead last and lost my junior high school Canadian Idol.  I knew then that music must be my destiny!!” Signed to award-winning Canadian country music label MDM Recordings Inc., David describes his sound as melodic pop-rock influenced country.

I had the chance to sit down with David and talk about his brand new single, "What If I Don't" and felt an instant likability, a gentle charm in his personality.  His love for his music is so heart felt and the passion that comes through him as we spoke is exactly what he delivers in the kind of hopeless romantic feeling one takes away from his music.  It is so sincere and his dedication to his craft goes straight to the heart strings of someone's sole with his lyrics.

James has an undeniable ambition for his career now and his thinking long-term for what lays ahead for this talented singer/songwriter.  He is incredibly humble about his surroundings working with seasoned vets like Chad Brownlee, and Jess Moskaluke.

"It feels like one big family when we all get together and talk about our careers.  "Everyone has been so open and willing to share ideas and help one another,' says James.  "There is a great comfort and ease that I get when someone like Chad Brownlee sits down to just chat and answer any of my questions that I might have about my music." "Chad is such a nice guy honestly, says James."  "He is so humble and cares so much about all of us on the roster and its great to hear his opinion on things." "When Chad takes the stage he never once misses a note."  "He is incredible," said James.  "I am really lucky to be working with any one of these incredible artists let alone all of them," says James.

David James has just released his brand new single and video for the single "What If I Don't" and once again, this song is echoing into the moments in people's own personal lives which is the recipe for another hit for this hard working country artist.

Leaving Thomas Brand New Single 'Waiting Kind of Girl' Interview with Kim Cyr

Leaving Thomas Interview with Country NOW and THEN Magazine's with Kim Cyr, click here

November 28, 2016; Toronto, ON / Calgary, AB - MDM Recordings Inc. (MDM) was thrilled to announce a new addition to their award-winning roster. Leaving Thomas, a Calgary-based energetic contemporary country duo, Annika Odegard and Bryton Udy join the MDM team, signing a 3-year licensing deal.  The band debuted their first single, “Waiting Kind Of Girl”, to Canadian country radio on December 25, 2016. The single is now available worldwide on all digital platforms.

MDM Recordings’ latest signing, Leaving Thomas is a great coup for this award winning label rounding out their roster with another hit act. Fans are already responding to the duo's first release 'Waiting Kind of Girl.'

‘Waiting Kind of Girl‘ went to radio on Christmas Day and is already the talk of the town. The two teased the single when they announced they were signed to MDM Recordings back in November. In the video, the two showcase their undeniable energy and excitement for ‘Waiting Kind of Girl’ while sitting in the studio listening to the song.

Annika and Bryton recently performed the duet's single 'Waiting Kind of Girl' showcasing their natural ease and confidence with one another with their stage performance.  It was easy to see why MDM Recording wanted to sign them in November 2016.  The chemistry and personnel connection that I saw only comes from something you are born with and it was captivating yet simplistic and completely natural.

I recently had the opportunity to interview this energetic, fun duo and the personal connection is undeniable which stems back to their childhood friendship.     A new legacy has begun with these two. The Canadian music industry needed a male and female duo and now we have that with 'Leaving Thomas' giving the fans music that is fresh and magical.  You can't help but love the feeling you get when you hear the sweet harmony that is fresh and dynamic  delivering such a positive message in the lyrics.

"I was inspired by my own experience, said Annika Odegard.  I had approached Bryton Udy with the idea behind "Waiting Kind of Girl" and we decided to write a positive song to empower others:

We hope the song serves a reminder to people of their self-worth and that they don't need to wait around for someone else to make them happy.

We love this song because it's a blast to play live, it''s upbeat, and we believe in the meaning behind the song."

"Their inspiration draws from a range of fellow artists, and personal favourites from Keith Urban and Shania Twain, to Stevie Wonder. Lyrically, they let their personal experiences guide their stories. Shares Odegard, "It’s always a very organic, natural process when we write together, and each song is close to our hearts because of the personal connection we have to each one."

Both have a very strong background in music from a young age. Odegard and Udy first met as part of the children’s chorus in a local production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. They reconnected 10 years later at the 2012 Calgary Stampede Talent Search, where Odegard won the grand prize, and Udy was crowned as "Most Promising Performer." A deep friendship formed, and following brief, independent solo endeavors, the "BFF's" solid friendship later evolved into a creative musical collaboration. The distinctive name Leaving Thomas, comes from a witty merger of the duo’s middle names.

Leaving Thomas has already performed throughout Calgary and surrounding area, opening for such acts as Colt Ford and Andi Case. They also released an acoustic EP album titled The Ground Floor in January 2016.

2017 is looking pretty exciting for this duo as one's to watch in country pop music.  What an amazing start for these two talented singer/songwriters and what an incredible future in music for them both.   Here is the official video for "Waiting Kind of Girl"

DOC WALKER RELEASES BRAND NEW ALBUM

“WEATHERVANE”

FEATURING SINGLE “HEART OF THE HEARTLAND”

Country legends Doc Walker have released their new album, Weathervane, today. The album features nine tracks, including their first single “Heart of the Heartland”, a couple of classic covers (by Dan Seals and by Faces), and some brand-new tracks that will be sure to remind fans of what makes Doc Walker so great.

“Weathervane to me is a reflection of the amazingly crazy life I've lived. I am one of those guys that never left his home town, yet had the opportunity to travel the world. I've seen Canada from coast to coast many times throughout the years staring out the windows of vans, old buses, new buses, trains and planes, and every time I'm shocked by the beauty of our country, but my heart has always been in the Prairies,” says lead singer, Chris Thorsteinson.

With over 20 Top 10 singles in total, Doc Walker is one of the most recognized Canadian country acts of the past two decades. The group has received multiple Canadian Country Music Awards, including Fans’ Choice, Group or Duo of the Year, CMT Video of the Year, Single of the Year, and Country Music Program or Special of the Year. In addition, Doc Walker has been nominated for several JUNO Awards for Country Album of the Year, including a win in 2009 for the album Beautiful Life.

Following a busy winter which saw the group take to the CP Holiday Train and perform at the Heritage Classic in their hometown of Winnipeg, Doc Walker are gearing up for Dauphin Countryfest (MB) in June, Murillo Countryfest (ON), and Stonewall Quarry Days (MB). Fans can hear from the duo directly when the track by track is released later this month.
